Mark H. Allen joined Pennington Allen Capital Partners in August 2006 as president, co-manager, member and equal owner of the Firm.
For the past several years, Allen has been a senior executive officer for OpenTV [NASDAQ:OPTV], a technology company headquartered in San Francisco, and controlled by Liberty Media [NYSE:L]. OpenTV is one of the world's leading providers of technologies and services enabling the delivery of digital and richer interactive television experiences. OpenTV's platform software has been deployed in over 62 million digital set-top-boxes in 96 countries and has approximately 20 offices around the world. Allen served as an Executive Vice President of OpenTV from 2002 to 2006 and served in several different key positions, including General Counsel, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Business Development, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Technology Licensing and Commercial Affairs.
Immediately prior to joining OpenTV, Allen was Executive Vice President of Business Development for a subsidiary of Liberty Media [NYSE:L] commencing in May 2002 which was an entity formed to accomplish a roll-up in the interactive television sector. Allen served in a dual role as chief legal officer, excluding intellectual property matters, and as second-highest ranking business person, during the negotiation, due diligence and closing of the acquisition of controlling interest in three public companies in the interactive television sector, OpenTV Corp., Wink Communications and ACTV. Allen was the lead negotiator in the acquisition of BettingCorp, an Internet wagering company with wagering products deployed on the BSkyB satellite pay television network in the UK, which involved the exploration of a wide variety of complex legal issues related to the legality of wagering and betting in different markets. Ultimately, all of the acquired companies were rolled into OpenTV, at which time Allen joined OpenTV as an Executive Vice President.
Prior to joining Liberty, from February 2002 through May 2002, Allen served as Executive Vice President of Technology Licensing and Business Development for Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. [NASDA:GMST]. Allen’s primary duties included serving as lead negotiator, or in a significant role, in major customer relationships, including AOLTW (more with Time Warner Cable), Philips, Canal+, Thomson Consumer Electronics, Pace, Microsoft® and all major U.S cable and satellite companies. From September 1999 through May 2002, Allen served as President & COO, TV Guide Affiliate Sales, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. Allen’s primary duties and responsibilities as President and COO included: establishing, maintaining and improving internal relationships with executives managing the broad array of TV Guide products, including TV Guide Magazine, TV Guide Interactive, TV Guide Channel, TVG Network (focused on interactive wagering on horse racing) and others; maintaining and enhancing TV Guide’s relationships with the major domestic cable systems and satellite providers; negotiating major contracts with these entities; managing and supervising TV Guide’s field sales operations; creating business models, rate cards and contract terms for the various products, and various other special projects.
From 1994 through September 1999, Allen was a shareholder, director and president of Johnson, Allen, Jones & Dornblaser, a boutique business law firm in Tulsa. Allen served as outside counsel for numerous clients in corporate planning, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic relationship agreements and a wide variety of other matters. Allen enjoyed a Martindale Hubbell Rating of AV, the highest level peer assessment rating for both competency and integrity and was selected and listed in The Best Lawyers in America (1994-1999), published by Willard/White, Inc. and in Tulsa's Best Lawyers in Tulsa People (September, 1997-1999).
Allen began his career with one of Tulsa’s largest firms, Gable & Gotwals and was a shareholder and member of the board of directors when he left with several of his partners to form their own firm in early 1994.
Allen became a certified public accountant in Oklahoma in 1980 and he received his BBA with Special Distinction in Accounting from the University of Oklahoma in 1978 and his Juris Doctorate from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1982.
Additionally, Allen has served on the boards of various private companies and nonprofit organizations. He served as President of Youth Services of Tulsa for three terms and in other leadership positions on the board of that organization for over 12 years. He is also past Chairman of the Tulsa American Heart Association and has served on the Leadership Tulsa and Child Abuse Network Boards and on the Advisory Board for the Tulsa Area United Way. In 1996, Allen was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Tulsans by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
